Summer Leadership Conference

The LMTI kicks off with two, five-day Summer Leadership Conferences at Camp Ralph Mason in beautiful Hardwick, NJ. The program, however, is a 10 month commitment for participants & advisors, as well as the LMTI staff. LMTI is ideally suited for groups of students that intend to continue working together after their participation in the Summer Leadership Conference. The goal of the Summer Leadership Conference is to provide "Action Groups" (3-20 students from the same school/community) with the tools and knowledge necessary to develop and successfully implement peer-focused prevention strategies to reduce risk factors identified by the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP). The LMTI staff will work closely with your students throughout the school year to provide support as needed. In addition, several supplemental events, such as a statewide Reunion, a statewide Lock In, and networking meetings give participants the opportunity to stay motivated throughout the school year.

The LMTI accomplishes its goal of providing safe, effective, empowering, and FUN prevention methods through the concept of KNOWLEDGE, MOTIVATION, ACTION, and CHANGE. Click on each word below to find out what to expect.

Knowledge
Workshops
LMTI participants will be given the opportunity to choose from a wide variety of workshop topics to provide an experiential learning process. Workshops topics are centered upon up to date issues that are imperative to high school students. Participants leave workshops with increased knowledge as well as tools to utilize in their Action Planning Process.
Small Group Discussions
All LMTI participants will be randomly placed into small group discussion groups called "Process Groups." This enables student leaders to meet new people and to openly discuss topics that are presented during the course of the LMTI week. These discussions are facilitated by adult volunteers and/or trained college staff and are designed to build skills, friendships, and self-esteem, while encouraging networking among youth from diverse backgrounds and other areas of the state.
Diversity
The LMTI is dedicated to providing participants with an experience that reflects the diversity of New Jersey. Students will have the rare and unique chance to interact and network with students from communities other than their own, gaining insight to the similarities that exist.
Motivation
Keynote Presenters
LMTI keynote presenters have been carefully selected to insure the highest levels of quality, creativity, and effectiveness. Participants will have the opportunity to see and interact with national as well as local presenters who are known for their unconventional and non traditional presentation styles. Don't expect any lectures- get ready for dynamic and enthusiastic comedians, musicians, and actors who address topics such as leadership, diversity, and alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs.
Challenge Course
One of the teambuilding highlights of the LMTI is participation in an ASE low ropes challenge course. This unique experience will help foster group cohesion and individual self discovery amongst your Action Group.
Free Time & Other Activities
Each day of the conference is packed with activities designed to facilitate personal growth and information gathering; but there is also time just about each day for students to relax, swim, play games, and participate in both structured and unstructured fun activities.
Action
Action Planning Sessions
At least once a day, you will meet with the students from your school/community to develop a prevention plan to implement back home. Students will have the chance to candidly identify risk and protective factors in their school/community. You will be given a complete guide to planning, strategizing, and executing this plan.
Networking
Student leaders at LMTI are given the chance to meet and learn from other prevention leaders throughout the state. Participants can share ideas for prevention programming in an excited & energized environment.
Change
Scientifically Based Prevention Methods and Personal Growth
Peer-focused prevention has been proven by the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP) as one of the most effective methods of prevention. Participants will utilize community assessment tools, identifying risk & protective factors and creating positive solutions to challenges. LMTI prepares students to not only make positive changes, but to be proud advocates of those changes. Prevention programs designed by these students will have a far reaching impact in their schools and/or communities. Students will have the opportunity to grow and to learn as individuals, in turn enhancing their abilities as leaders.
